Affordable Art Fair
This week I attended the Affordable Art Fair at the Battersea Park in London. Contemporary Art under 3000 pounds, the Spring addition which was running from 13th – 16th March 2008. After a nice walk from the Sloane Square Underground station we got a free entrance to the event. Thanks Urška for the ticket.
The Fair started with the University of Arts London show: The Shape of Things to Come, which showed 22 artists from BA and MA courses of St. Martins, Chelsea, LCC and other London Arts colleges. Some where extraordinary cool, other boring and no idea behind it, but I guess thats with all things. A walk further on into the actual fair opened a view to narrow paths, loads of people and many galleries. There was so much work on sale that you had a hard time actually looking at everything while you also had to watch out for people bumping into you, because the crowd was quite big.
What interested me into going was that this is where you actually see the current trends in contemporary art and what people actually buy. Most of the things are still paintings, there is a lot of printmaking also, some etchings and screenprints. Photography is probably next and bronze and other sculptures. Most of the paintings and even other stuff is not something that you would shout: WOW. But you can still find neat little stuff, like porcelain Penguins and bronze Kendoka, and even some more modern characters painted on canvas. Other things are mostly your usual landscape and portrait paintings for living room.
Overall I liked to see what goes on in the Art market and also the prices that you can actually afford, even though sometimes still you though, what the hell how can that be priced at 400 pounds. But I suppose it will always be there. And yea I would be really happy if one time my work actually finds a place at a show like that.
